Why do Pokémon cards get bent – and how do you save them from moisture damage?

If you're like me, you've probably felt that little panic when you open the binder and see that your precious cards are no longer lying flat - they've started to bend like chips ! It happens to both beginners and die-hard collectors. In this post, we'll dive into why Pokémon cards get bent from moisture , and most importantly: how to fix it and prevent it from happening again.

What is actually happening with the cards?

Pokémon cards are made up of several layers of paper and a thin layer of plastic (often called "foil" in holographic cards). Paper is an organic material that is sensitive to changes in humidity. As humidity increases, the paper absorbs moisture from its surroundings. This causes the fibers in the card to swell—often more on one side than the other—leading to the card bending or warping .

This is particularly true for foil cards, as the plastic layer on the front does not swell as much as the paper backing. The result is a typical domed shape where the edges of the card rise from the surface.

Common causes of moisture problems:

Storage in basements, attics or damp spaces.
Changing temperatures and humidity.
No use of airtight covers or storage solutions.

How to fix bent Pokémon cards

1. Dry and flat pressing method

Place the card between two smooth surfaces, such as clean sheets of paper or microfiber cloths, and place it between two heavy books. Leave it for 3-7 days in a dry room (preferably with a dehumidifier or air conditioning). This will help the card return to a flatter shape.

Tip: Do not press foil cards with heat (e.g. hair dryer or fan heater) – this can permanently damage the shiny layer.

2. Use moisture protection

If you store the cards in boxes or binders, consider putting in silica gel sachets (the same kind that come with shoe boxes or electronics) to absorb excess moisture.

3. Invest in the right protection

Always keep your cards in:
Plastic pockets or sleeves
Toploaders (rigid plastic protectors for valuable cards)
A sealable plastic box or a dedicated collection box with an airtight seal

Preventive measures

Keep the cards in a space with constant humidity (40–55%)
Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in the room.
Avoid storing cards near windows, radiators or in damp basements.

Curled Pokémon cards are often the result of humidity affecting the delicate paper material. With proper storage and a few simple measures – such as pressing, moisture protection and the right protective sleeves – you can both save and protect your trading cards for the future. For the serious collector, climate control is as important as the cards themselves.
